Seeing Mael’s cell phone number flashing on his caller ID gave Tor relief. No denying it was fucking cowardly of him to leave his Sub hanging like that, but he had to take this call. “Jesus Christ, why am I calling him my Sub, when he isn’t my anything?” Tor whispered.

What possessed him to goad Kelas into playing this dangerous game, when he knew Kelas would never refuse him? A man like Kelas, who gave all without reserve, who recklessly took action without thinking about the consequences… Tor knew all that from a single glance. They had never crossed paths until that night on the roof, but it felt like Kelas was a stranger he’d known all his life.

God. What would he say to Mael? Tor could buy more time, let the phone continue ringing and Mael would stop. He would be too busy stuck in love-love land with his werewolf mate to call again once their plane lifted off.

“Mael will see through me either way. Now or never.” He leaned against the wall, shut his eyes, calmed his breathing, and picked up the receiver. “Hey, Mael. Why are you calling? Didn’t I tell you to focus on your honeymoon?” Fuck, he sounded so fake and upbeat. Tor never sounded upbeat. He was the poster boy for being all dark and brooding.

“This can’t wait,” Mael said. Tor heard Ulfric, his mate, grumbling something under his breath. “It will just be a second, you grumpy wolf.”

Tor had to smile. He wondered if he’d ever have something like that. Someone he could joke with, screw around with during the day, and tie up at night. What would it be like, to meet Kelas during his lunch break at the nearby park? Surprise him with something kinky to wear for the evening, then go back to work, counting the hours until night fell and…

“Holy fuck,” Tor muttered under his breath. How could his thoughts fly to the impossible? He didn’t even know the first thing about Kelas— his favorite color, his likes and dislikes, or who the fuck hurt him so badly he ended up on Tor’s hands this way. Broken and emotionally tortured. Needy. Fragile despite his strength.

“Is something wrong? Is it the shifter? Is he giving you problems?”

Tor could imagine Mael frowning. The last thing he needed was for Mael to be so worried he’d make adjustments to his plans, but he couldn’t lie to his brother either.

“Tell me why you called first.”

“Fuck, Tor. You’re always so damn stubborn. Fine, we’ll have it your way. I’m calling to tell you Ulfric’s informants came back with information about Kelas. His employer is a mob boss turned respectable business tycoon Ulfric dealt with in the past.”

Tor cradled the receiver close to his ear, and tried to calm his nerves. “And?”

“Ulfric made quick negotiations and came to an agreement with Mr. Smith to cancel the kill order. He’s good with that sort of thing, you know?”

Tor didn’t miss the pride in Mael’s voice, but he wasn’t surprised.
